AI now handles a lot of the engineering analysis and documentation behind an aircraft or spacecraft design. Signing off that a design is safe to fly, and making the final go/no-go call in the hangar, stays a licensed person's job, since certification, not capability, is the real bottleneck.
What part of aerospace engineering does AI already handle well?
Running the engineering analysis and drafting the technical documentation behind a new aircraft or spacecraft design used to take an engineer's own painstaking work. AI now handles much of that analysis and paperwork, which is why the desk side of this job is moving faster than the actual approval process around it.
If AI can do the analysis, why does certification still take a person?
Signing off that a design is legally airworthy, and physically inspecting a composite part for hidden damage a scan alone might miss, put a licensed engineer's own accountability behind the result. Making the final go or no-go call before a launch or flight is also a judgment call someone has to own in the moment, which is exactly why certification, not raw capability, is what actually slows this field down.
How can an aerospace engineer build the right experience?
An aerospace-engineering or related physical-sciences background is still the standard entry point, and time spent actually in the hangar during ground and flight tests builds the hands-on judgment that certification work depends on. Getting comfortable working alongside AI-drafted analysis, rather than redoing it by hand, is also worth learning early, since that's now the normal starting point for a design review.
