Before the job hunt, do these first
If you lost your job through no fault of your own, file right away in the state where you worked. Most states replace about 30–50% of your old pay, up to a weekly cap ($450 in California, $1,208 in Washington), for up to 26 weeks — some for as few as 12. The first payment usually takes 2–3 weeks.
U.S. Department of Labor: unemployment insurance →Under WIOA, the federal workforce law, laid-off workers can get a training account that pays an approved school directly for short courses such as CDL, CNA, welding or HVAC; funding and waiting lists vary by area. Since July 2026, Workforce Pell grants also cover approved 8- to 15-week programs.

Food and grocery delivery (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart)App gigFirst payday1–3 weeksHourly pay · gross$12–18/hrUntil AIExpected Sep 2032High risk
Tips are about half of what you earn, waiting between orders pays nothing, and once fuel and wear are paid the real hourly rate is far below the gross.
- Steps
- Sign up in the app, upload your license and insurance, enter your SSN, and wait for the background check, which usually takes 3–10 days; you can take orders as soon as you are approved.
- Requirements
- 18+ (19+ for DoorDash in about 14 states; 19+ to deliver by car with Uber Eats, 21+ in California and New York), an SSN and a clean enough record; car delivery also needs a license and insurance, and in some cities you can deliver by bike at 18.
- Cost
- Nothing to join, but fuel, maintenance, phone data and insurance are on you, and no public program covers them.
- How pay is counted
- Gridwise 2025 driver data, gross per active hour incl. tips: DoorDash average $12.43 to Uber Eats average $18.06 (median $14.07), × 173 h spent on orders. Waiting between orders is unpaid, so 40 hours a week online earns less; car costs and self-employment tax come out of it (IRS business rate: 76 cents a mile from July 2026).

Warehouse associate (Amazon, UPS, FedEx)Direct hireFirst payday1–3 weeksHourly pay · gross$15–17/hrUntil AIExpected Sep 2031High risk
Pick-rate quotas and repetitive lifting are hard on backs and knees, night and weekend shifts are the norm, and warehouse robots are cutting the number of people each building needs.
- Steps
- Apply online for a shift at a fulfillment center, sort center or delivery station, clear the background check and drug test, then learn the job in on-site safety training.
- Requirements
- 18+, a background check and drug screen, and the stamina for long standing shifts with repetitive lifting; no experience needed.
- Cost
- No upfront cost; the employer trains you.
- How pay is counted

Construction laborer (day labor or contractor)Day workFirst payday1–3 weeksHourly pay · gross$17–19/hrUntil AIExpected Sep 2036Medium risk
Construction is among the deadliest industries (falls, struck-by injuries, heat), work stops in bad weather, and agency shifts can vanish without notice.
- Steps
- Sign up with a day-labor agency such as PeopleReady and claim shifts in its app (many roles offer next-day pay), or get hired directly by a contractor.
- Requirements
- Fitness and a way to reach the site. Nevada requires an OSHA 10-hour card for all construction workers, states such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri and New York require it on public works, and larger New York City sites (with a site safety manager, coordinator or superintendent) require a 40-hour SST card.
- Cost
- Boots, gloves and any required OSHA 10 or SST course are your own expense.
- How pay is counted
- BLS May 2025 construction laborers, 10th–25th percentile ($16.87–$18.57/hr) × 173 h; rain, cold and gaps between jobs cut the hours.

Self-checkout is shrinking cashier jobs, many schedules are part-time, and in states on the $7.25 federal minimum the starting rate can be very low.
- Steps

- Requirements

Package delivery driver (Amazon DSP)Direct hireFirst payday2–5 weeksHourly pay · gross$18–22/hrUntil AIExpected Sep 2034Medium risk
Routes are packed tight by Amazon's software, heat inside the van is a real hazard, and your employer is a small contractor that depends on a single client.
- Steps
- Apply to a local Amazon Delivery Service Partner, pass the driving-record, background and drug checks, then finish the company's road and safety training before your first solo route.
- Requirements
- A regular driver's license with a clean driving record, and the fitness to carry packages on and off the van all day.
- Cost
- No upfront cost; the DSP supplies the van.
- How pay is counted

Hours rise and fall with your client list, you work alone in strangers' homes, and pay is among the lowest in health care.
- Steps
- Medicare-certified agencies need you to finish at least 75 hours of training (including 16 hours of supervised practical training) and pass a competency evaluation; many agencies run that course themselves and start you on client visits right after.
- Requirements
- A background check, reliable transportation between clients' homes, and a passed competency evaluation for Medicare-certified agencies.
- Cost
- Often free when the hiring agency trains you; otherwise a short private course, which a WIOA training account can cover.

Security guard (unarmed)Certificate firstFirst payday1–2 monthsHourly pay · gross$15–17/hrUntil AIExpected Sep 2033Medium risk
Overnight shifts are long and pay is low, there is little room to earn more without an armed license, and remote video monitoring is replacing some posts.
- Steps
- Take your state's pre-licensing course, get fingerprinted and apply for registration. In California that means the Power to Arrest course, Live Scan fingerprinting and a BSIS application (processing target: 60 days; you can work once it shows as approved online), then 32 hours of skills training within six months.
- Requirements
- 18+, a clean FBI and state criminal check, and a state guard license in most states; armed posts need extra permits.

Weeks away from home, 11-hour driving days and high injury and crash risk; quit a sponsored-training contract early and you may owe the tuition.
- Steps
- Get a commercial learner's permit, complete the federally required entry-level driver training at a registered school (Lincoln Land CC: 4 weeks of day classes or 6 weeks of night classes), wait the mandatory 14 days, pass the skills test, then drive with a trainer at your first carrier.

- Cost
- Lincoln Land CC charges $4,500 plus about $150 for the DOT physical, drug screen and driving record. Carrier-sponsored schools cost nothing upfront, but quitting early can leave you owing $6,000 or more. A WIOA training account can pay for an approved school.

Certified nursing assistant (CNA)Certificate firstFirst payday1–5 monthsHourly pay · gross$16–18/hrUntil AIExpected Sep 2040Medium risk
