How real is a robot actually taking this job, compared to most others here?
Unlike most jobs on this site, where AI changes the surrounding work rather than the core hands-on task, a machine designed specifically to find a vein and draw blood without a person is now going through the federal approval process required before any new medical device reaches patients. That makes this one of the more literal cases of a machine doing the exact task a person does today.
Why doesn't this happen everywhere the moment such a device is approved?
Only a handful of states currently require any license to draw blood at all, and there's no federal rule setting how many people a lab needs on staff, so a lab chain is free to adopt a drawing device on its own schedule rather than waiting on any regulation. That's why large test-and-lab chains, which run the most locations, are expected to cut draw staff first as they roll equipment out location by location.
What should someone drawing blood today do to stay ahead of this?
Building skill in the harder draws a machine struggles with — a small child, a dehydrated patient, a vein that rolls or collapses easily — protects a phlebotomist even where an automated device gets adopted, since a lab still needs someone for the cases the machine can't handle.
