Why does the licensed psychologist role survive?
Administering and interpreting a psychological test in the context of a specific person's life, building genuine trust in a face-to-face assessment, and judging a real suicide risk or a genuinely complex diagnosis are calls a licensed clinician has to make in person. Insurers already pay the same billing rate for many routine sessions whether a master's-level therapist or a doctoral psychologist provides them, part of why doctoral hiring specifically is the slower-moving piece.
What should a psychology doctoral student weigh?
Since insurers already reimburse many routine services at the same rate regardless of who provides them, specializing in complex diagnoses, risk assessment and cases that genuinely need a doctoral-level clinician is more defensible than routine talk therapy alone. A doctoral degree, a PhD or PsyD, followed by the national licensing exam remains the path to that kind of specialized practice.
