A self-driving van can already get a package most of the way there. What still stops it is the last stretch, up the stairs, past a locked gate, to a door where nobody answers, which is exactly the part a driver actually does all day.

If self-driving vans exist, why does this job survive?

Autonomous delivery vans are already being tested and are getting good at the driving itself, but getting a package the final distance from the curb to an actual door is still much harder for a robot than driving is. Carrying something up stairs, finding a way past a locked entrance, or figuring out what to do when nobody's home are everyday problems a driver solves without thinking twice.

Why isn't volume itself a bigger threat to this job?

The amount of parcels being delivered keeps growing, and that growth on its own is delaying any cuts, since more packages need more hands to move them regardless of what technology exists. Where automation is starting to appear first is inside large apartment complexes with a single delivery point, a much easier problem than a whole neighborhood of individual houses.
