A building can now unlock itself for residents, watch its own hallways and send a patrol robot down a corridor. What it can't do is talk down a stranger at the door — and that's the shrinking job's last stronghold.
Which guard duties are already being automated?
Unattended entry systems, remote video monitoring and patrol robots that roll through hallways on a set route are already replacing the guard who used to walk that same loop all night. What isn't automated yet is standing at a door deciding whether to let an unfamiliar person in, and physically responding when an alarm actually means something.
Why does a security team shrink instead of disappear?
A camera can flag a break-in, but someone still has to be the body that shows up, and a resident still generally prefers a person at the front desk to a screen. That's why this site expects a smaller team rather than no team, with the actual cut in headcount landing a few years after the automation itself is already common in a building.
What should a guard do to stay employable as this shifts?
Skills that don't show up on a patrol log start to matter more: de-escalating a confrontation at the door, running the monitoring software itself instead of just walking a route, and being the calm, recognizable face a building's residents already trust. Guards who can also operate and troubleshoot the new camera and access systems become harder to replace than ones who only patrol.
