The US Air Force is already flying prototype combat drones meant to fly alongside a human pilot rather than replace the cockpit outright. That changes how many pilots a squadron needs long before it changes who makes the call to fire.
What is actually changing first: the pilot, or the squadron?
Collaborative combat aircraft — drones designed to fly as part of a team led by a human pilot — are expected to enter real squadron use before too long, which reduces how many pilots a given squadron needs rather than removing pilots from combat altogether. The pilot's own cockpit tasks — flying in bad conditions, handling an in-flight emergency, coordinating live with a wingman — aren't what's shrinking.
Why does a human still make the final call in combat?
Defense department policy keeps a human being responsible for any decision to use lethal force, and federal law governs how large the pilot training pipeline and squadron structure can be — both of which slow how fast this shift plays out compared to the technology itself being ready. That's a policy choice as much as a technical one, and it's not expected to change as fast as the drones themselves improve.
What should someone training to be a military pilot focus on?
Skill flying and fighting as part of a mixed team — coordinating with an unmanned wingman rather than only other piloted aircraft — is becoming as important as traditional stick-and-rudder skill, since that's the direction squadron structure is heading. The judgment and split-second decision-making a cockpit emergency demands remains the part of the job policy is least likely to hand to a machine.
