That capability is stretching how many rooms one anesthesiologist can oversee at once under the federal billing rule, not eliminating the physician from the floor.
Why does a physician still have to be reachable in the OR?
The moment a patient's airway closes or their heart rhythm turns dangerous mid-surgery, someone has to react in seconds, and malpractice liability and board certification keep that call with a licensed physician. Nurse anesthetists already handle anesthesia alone in many states, so a doctor's distinct role is that instant crisis response, not routine dosing.
What should someone training in anesthesiology focus on?
Since nurse anesthetists already deliver routine anesthesia solo in much of the country, a physician's value increasingly sits in handling the case that goes wrong: a blocked airway, a sudden crisis, a complex nerve block. Getting comfortable overseeing several rooms through a monitor, not just one patient at a time, is also becoming part of the job.
