Backend Developer: what AI changes and what stays

A backend developer gets woken up at an ugly hour because a service is down and has minutes to decide what matters most while everything is on fire, and separately negotiates with another team exactly what data an API will promise to return so nobody's system breaks later. Agents already write routine backend code.

What backend work do agents already handle directly?

Writing a standard API endpoint, a database query, or a test case is already something an agent does directly and reliably, work that used to fill most of a normal coding day. That has already removed a large share of the routine, line-by-line building work from a person's plate.

What still needs a person during an outage?
