Most people already bank from their phone, so the counter itself has less to do. What's left at the branch is the handful of situations a screen can't handle well: an anxious older customer, physical cash, and something that looks like fraud.
Why did teller hiring fall before AI kiosks even arrived?
Mobile banking had already pulled routine deposits and transfers away from the counter, and AI kiosks and virtual bank staff are now taking over most of what's left at the window. Why does a branch still keep human tellers at all?
Serving an older customer who doesn't trust or can't use a kiosk, physically handling cash, and noticing the small behavioral signs of a scam in progress all take a person paying attention in the room. Someone also has to be accountable when cash goes missing or a transaction looks wrong, which is a real responsibility a machine isn't given.
What should a teller build toward from here?
Lean into the fraud-spotting and de-escalation side of the job rather than the routine transaction side, since that's the part branches keep staffing for. Volunteering for training on scam patterns and elder-customer service, and getting comfortable being the one who handles a customer a kiosk already failed, is what keeps a teller role useful at a branch with fewer people.
