Building MEP / HVAC Engineer: what AI changes and what stays

Software that builds a full 3D model of a building's pipes and ducts can already run the load calculations and flag where two systems are about to occupy the same space before anyone breaks ground. Finding an actual leak hidden behind a finished ceiling is a different kind of problem entirely.

How much design work does AI already handle here?

A building's mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are now largely designed inside a shared 3D model, and software layered on top of that model already runs the load calculations and catches most clashes — spots where a duct and a pipe are scheduled to pass through the same space — before construction starts. That's cutting down the hours a design team needs on a typical project.

What keeps an MEP engineer on the actual job site?

Tracing a rattling duct or a leak hidden behind a finished ceiling, standing with electricians and plumbers on site to sort out a conflict the model didn't catch, and commissioning a finished system by hand, actually running it and adjusting it until it works, are still physical, in-person jobs. No modeling software does that part.

What should someone in this field build experience in?

Since the design calculations are what AI absorbs first, deliberately spending time on commissioning and troubleshooting a system that's already installed, and coordinating directly with other trades on site, builds the harder-to-automate half of this career. Mechanical or architectural engineering both support that path.
