Most of a detailer's shift is spent bent into a car's footwells and seat creases, working a rag or brush into every crevice by hand, then stepping back outside to work fast in the wind, sun or cold before the next car pulls in.
What part of car washing already runs itself?
The tunnel that sprays, scrubs and rinses the outside of a car has been automated for a long time and needs almost no one standing there. What's left for a person is the inside: finding a spot in the carpet or a scuff on the dash that a driver missed, then cleaning it by feel — a job robots handle awkwardly at best right now.
Why does interior detailing stay a hands-on job?
A cramped cabin full of odd angles, cup holders and fabric seams is a hard shape for a robotic arm to reach into confidently, and judging what actually counts as clean, versus just wet, still takes a person's eye and touch. That gap is wide enough that this site expects detailing work to stay largely human for a long stretch even as more of the exterior wash runs unattended.

There's no license needed to start; most attendants learn technique on the job, often moving from washing to detailing as they get faster and more careful. Building a reputation for finding the stain or scratch a customer didn't mention, and working cleanly and quickly in rough weather, is what turns this into steadier, better-tipped work.
