QC Analyst / Chemical Technician: what AI changes and what stays

In a QC lab, a machine can already run the instrument, read out the result, and draft the certificate that goes with it. Getting the sample ready for that machine, and knowing when a reading is off enough to redo it, is still work done by hand.

What's already automated in a quality-control lab?

Running the instrument itself, reading off the resulting numbers, and drafting the paperwork that certifies a batch passed are all things a lab can already largely automate, and that side of the job is moving fast. What's slower to change is everything that happens before the instrument even starts — weighing out a sample, mixing a reagent, setting up the run correctly.

Why does sample prep keep a person employed here?

Handling reagents and instruments safely, recalibrating equipment once it drifts out of spec, and deciding whether a strange reading means the sample needs to be run again are still judgment calls made by hand, not steps a machine schedules itself. Robots built specifically for that kind of prep work are still catching up to what an experienced technician does automatically.

What should someone training as a lab analyst focus on?

Since running the instrument and writing up the result are the fastest-automating part of the job, hands-on skill at preparing a sample correctly, handling reagents safely, and calibrating equipment is the more durable foundation to build. A degree in chemistry or a laboratory-science technology program both lead into this kind of work.
