A cinematographer's job splits into two very different halves: framing routine coverage, which a fixed or robotic camera can now handle, and reading how light and space change scene to scene, which still needs a person standing behind the lens.
Which parts of filming does AI take over first?
Static product shots, safety wide angles and generic B-roll are already inside AI's reach, and studios are folding more of that routine coverage into daily workflows. What a generated shot still can't do is adjust framing the instant an actor moves unexpectedly or the light shifts mid-take — that split-second read is what keeps a person behind the camera on set.
What can't a generated shot replace on set?
There's no license or union rule protecting this work the way a courtroom protects a lawyer's job — what protects it is timing. A director explains a mood in a few words, and turning that into a specific angle, movement and exposure, live, while carrying a heavy rig through a long shoot day, is a judgment call no generated shot makes fast enough to use on set.
How should camera crews and film students prepare?
Working operators gain the most by shooting in unpredictable conditions — documentary runs, live events, anything where light won't repeat — since that's the judgment a preset shot can't fake. Students choosing film production or photography should build a reel that shows reaction speed, not just polished frames, and get comfortable directing AI-generated B-roll as one more tool rather than competition for the job.
