A commercial diver drops into water so dark that a job is often done entirely by touch, welding or cutting steel on the seabed by feel while tracking, the whole time, exactly how long it's safe to stay down.
What underwater work has already shifted to robots?
Remotely operated and self-piloting underwater vehicles already handle most routine inspection and filming work, tasks that used to require sending a diver down just to look at something, and that reach is expected to grow as those machines get better at actual manipulation, not just looking. That shift has already thinned some of the lower-risk work divers used to do.
Why can't a robot take over welding underwater?
Welding and cutting steel by feel in zero visibility, and managing a rescue or a decompression schedule where a wrong call can genuinely hurt someone, stay decisions this site rates as only lightly protected by any rule, yet still hard for a machine to take on. It expects roughly half of today's core diving work to still need a person in the water two decades out.
How does someone actually train to become a commercial diver?
Since inspection work is what's moving to robots first, building real skill in hands-on tasks like underwater welding and cutting is the safer specialization to chase. Most people train at a dedicated commercial diving school before working up through supervised dives, since decompression and dive-safety judgment take real hours underwater to learn, not just a classroom.
