What's AI already doing to design work in this field?
Drafting a circuit design and reviewing drawings for errors already run substantially through AI tools, cutting hours out of work that used to fill an engineer's early career. What still needs a person is tracing an actual fault on a live panel, physically commissioning new equipment, and working out a fix on site when a drawing doesn't match reality.
Why is this cut slower than the design work itself suggests?
Only work on public utility or government drawings needs a licensed engineer's official sign-off in most states, and even that license doesn't require a company to keep an engineer on staff, so on paper this role could shrink fast. What's actually holding hiring up for now is heavy building activity around data centers and the power grid, which keeps real demand ahead of the automation.
What should someone in this field build toward?
Getting hands-on with live commissioning and fault-tracing work, not just design software, is what will separate an engineer from the drafting tasks AI increasingly covers. Pursuing the licensed sign-off credential is also worth it for anyone aiming at utility or public infrastructure work, since that requirement isn't going away.
