Environmental Technician: what AI changes and what stays

Environmental technicians split into two kinds of work: running instruments and writing reports, which software already handles well, and going out to a stack or riverbank to pull a sample by hand, which still needs a person there.

Which parts of this job disappear into software first?

Lab analysis and the paperwork that follows already move to automated systems, and sensors that watch smokestacks around the clock now catch far more than a person checking by hand. What a machine still can't do is climb onto a rooftop or wade into a river to pull a sample correctly, or notice a reading looks wrong and needs a second check on site.

Why does field sampling stay a person's job?

No rule sets a fixed number of technicians for a site; a lab's quality accreditation just governs how tests are run, not how many people staff it. What keeps someone in the field is the work itself: dragging equipment up a stack in bad weather, or judging that an odd number is an equipment problem rather than real pollution.
