But a decades-old set of civil-rights rules requires schools to keep serving students still learning English no matter what, so the squeeze shows up first in classes with no such protection.

Drilling vocabulary, grammar and conversation practice is the exact task AI tutoring apps already do well — arguably better matched to a screen than most teaching. Where that shows up fastest is adult evening classes funded through general workforce programs and looser support roles, since those have no legal requirement forcing a district to keep staffing them at any particular level.
Why do some teaching jobs here stay protected?
A set of civil-rights laws going back decades — stemming from a Supreme Court case about a school district's duty to non-English-speaking students — obliges public schools to keep serving English learners, and separate federal funding is tied to those services. That protects the requirement to offer support, not a specific number of teachers, so districts can shrink staff while still technically meeting the law.
What helps someone build a career here?
Getting a teaching license plus the state's ESL endorsement — extra coursework layered on top of a standard teaching credential — is the formal path in; some go through degree programs built specifically around teaching English to non-native speakers. Since drills are what AI already does, time is better spent on what a tutoring app can't: reading a family's situation, adapting lessons to a specific student, and coordinating with other teachers on a child's overall plan.
