AI impact · ShrinkingQuant (Financial Engineer): what AI changes and what stays
A junior quant's early work used to mean building a pricing model by hand, testing it against years of market data, and shaping the resulting financial product. Software now handles most of that construction directly, leaving the harder job of actually getting a new product approved.
Why does modeling work shrink before approval work does?
Coding a pricing model, backtesting it against historical data, and structuring a financial product are tasks coding agents already do at a level YOU’RE NEXT rates as strong today, and that used to be most of a junior quant's job. YOU’RE NEXT expects junior hiring built around that modeling work to keep thinning through around 2030, while the approval side holds up longer.
What still needs a person to get a product approved?
Convincing a risk committee, a group of skeptical people who can say no, to actually approve a new financial product is a persuasion problem, not a modeling one, and that stays with a person. Judging what an ordinary retail customer will misunderstand about a complex product, and negotiating terms directly with an issuer or a regulator, also rely on judgment a model does not have.
What background and focus matter now?
An applied mathematics background remains a strong route into this field, and that has not changed even as coding agents write more of the actual model code. Since the modeling itself is increasingly automated, deliberately practicing how to present a model's risks clearly enough to persuade a skeptical committee is what separates someone who advances from someone who stays purely technical.
