A formwork carpenter builds a temporary wooden or metal mold strong enough to hold tons of wet concrete, nailing it together on a windy upper deck, then comes back after it sets to strip the forms and check the wall.
What part of formwork has already moved off the job site?
Aluminum system forms that snap together with less skilled labor, and precast concrete pieces poured and cured in a factory before arriving on a truck, have already cut how much custom carpentry a job needs, which is part of why this site rates change in this trade as arriving early even though AI itself plays a smaller direct role. Factory automation is absorbing more of that precast work every year.
Why does someone still have to build and strip forms on-site?
Assembling a form that has to hold the weight of wet concrete without failing, cutting and nailing lumber on a windy, unfinished deck, and stripping the form afterward to check that the wall came out right stay work that happens on the actual site, not in a factory. This site rates the barrier to moving that fully off-site at essentially nothing, and still expects less than half of today's work to need a person two decades out.
What should someone in this trade focus on as factories absorb more work?
Since precast and prefabricated systems are taking over more repetitive form-building, the more durable skill is on-site assembly of odd, one-off shapes and the judgment to know a form is safe before concrete gets poured into it. A carpentry program is a common way in, though most people still learn the bulk of this trade through a hands-on apprenticeship.
