A pattern maker turns a flat casting drawing into a solid wooden or metal shape that a foundry packs in sand to cast metal into, building in extra size because metal shrinks as it cools. Software that works out the shrinkage and split lines, then prints or mills the shape, already does most of that work.

What kind of pattern work is still done by hand?

Reading a casting drawing well enough to picture the finished part in three dimensions, and knowing by feel how a particular metal will shrink, stays a skill a person carries rather than one a file contains.
What should a pattern maker learn now?
Since new patterns increasingly come from a printer or a mill instead of a carving bench, the more durable skill is diagnosing why a cast part came out wrong and fixing the pattern by hand to correct it, work a shop still needs even after it stops cutting new patterns from scratch. Learning to check the digital files that now drive the printer or mill is also worth picking up, since someone still has to catch an error before metal is poured.
