A glassblower works at the furnace mouth, gathering molten glass on a rod and turning it non-stop so gravity doesn't pull it out of shape. For many, running a hands-on workshop for visitors is as much the business as selling finished pieces.
What part of glassmaking has already gone to machines?
Cutting and shaping flat sheet glass, the kind used for windows and mirrors, is already done by computer-controlled cutting machines, and that shift is already finished. Since flat-glass cutting is already machine work, the path forward runs through furnace time, stained-glass assembly and running workshops, skills a crafts program covering ceramics, jewelry and glass can build toward through hands-on study rather than a lecture hall. Because visitors specifically pay to watch the process, being comfortable narrating and teaching while working adds income a production shop alone doesn't offer.
