Graphic Designer: what AI changes and what stays

A designer gets a brief like make it feel more premium with nothing else to go on, turns that into an actual visual direction, then sits across from a client defending a color choice they instinctively want to change. Production work already runs through AI, so directing and defending an idea is most of what's left.

What production work does AI already do directly?

Resizing banners for every platform, retouching a photo, and generating a first comp in a chosen style from a short prompt are all things a tool now does directly, without a person opening the software to build each version by hand. That already thinned out the pure production side of the job.

What can't a prompt do that a designer still does?

Turning a vague, one-line brief into an actual visual direction, and then defending a specific choice, a color, a layout, to a client who instinctively wants to change it, both need a person who can read taste and argue for it out loud. A generated image can't sit in that meeting.

What should a designer's portfolio show now?

Since software skill alone is easy to get anywhere, a portfolio built around concept and the reasoning behind a choice, not just polished output, is what gets someone hired for client-facing work. Practicing how to explain and defend a design decision out loud matters as much as the design itself.
