Heavy Equipment Operator: what AI changes and what stays

Running heavy equipment means grading a road surface to the exact line by eye and feel, staying in constant contact with flaggers and crews working around live traffic, and starting the day by greasing and checking the machine over before it moves an inch.

What's already automated in heavy equipment work?

Rollers and graders on many job sites already run on GPS-guided machine control that keeps a surface within a set tolerance automatically, and compacting equipment that runs with no one in the cab is already in use on some sites. That's the controlled, repetitive part of the job, and it's already largely handled by the machine itself rather than a person's hands on the controls.

Why does an operator still need to be in the seat?
