Illustrator: what AI changes and what stays

Illustration split into two very different markets. Anyone commissioning a generic image for a game, book cover or ad now has an AI option, but a client hiring for a specific artist's recognizable style is still hiring a person, by name, on purpose.

What kind of illustration work went first?

Volume work — the tenth background character, the stock-style ad image — is what a generative model does convincingly and cheaply, and YOU'RE NEXT rates today's tool at about eight out of ten on that kind of output. Studios that used to commission dozens of interchangeable pieces from freelancers now generate most of them and commission only the pieces that need a real point of view.

Why can't a client just generate the rest too?

A recognizable personal style is the entire product for the artists who remain — clients hire that specific look, not 'an illustration.' Reading a vague brief and turning it into an image that matches a client's mood, then negotiating usage rights and scope, also takes a working relationship a prompt can't replace. That's why some illustrators keep full books of work while others lose commissions entirely.

How does an illustrator stay one of the few who last?

Build a style distinctive enough that someone could recognize it without your name on it, and say so out loud in your portfolio rather than blending in. Learn to direct AI tools as part of your process instead of ignoring them, and get comfortable negotiating usage rights, since that business skill now matters as much as the drawing itself. A degree in fine arts, illustration or graphic design helps build that base.
