Drafting earnings scripts and disclosure language is AI work now, but the relationships an IR specialist has built with analysts and major shareholders are what a company leans on when the stock drops and questions get hard.
Which IR tasks has AI already taken over?
Drafting earnings call scripts, preparing anticipated Q&A and writing first drafts of disclosure filings are tasks AI already does well, freeing up time that used to go into paperwork before every quarterly call. What AI can't do is sit across from a skeptical analyst and improvise a credible answer to a question the script didn't anticipate, or read from someone's tone that they're about to sell a large position.
Why does a shrinking stock still need a human IR contact?
Major shareholders and analysts build a relationship with a specific person over years, not with a company's disclosure system, and that relationship is what a firm relies on the day its stock drops and reporters start calling. Because investor relations teams are already small — often just a handful of people even at large companies — there isn't much routine staff left to automate away, so the cuts here come slower than in bigger departments.
How can someone in IR prepare for this change?
The strongest move is to spend less time drafting and more time in front of analysts and shareholders directly, since that's the part of the job that isn't shrinking. Getting comfortable handling an unscripted, hostile question live — on a call or in person — matters more now that AI has already taken over the writing that used to eat up the week before earnings.
