Judge: what AI changes and what stays

Behind the scenes, a clerk or research tool might draft a first pass at legal research before a ruling ever gets written. None of that changes who sits at the bench, decides whether a witness is telling the truth by watching them testify, and signs their name to a sentence.

How much of a judge's actual work can AI already handle?

AI is genuinely useful for finding relevant precedent and drafting research memos, work that used to take a law clerk far longer by hand. But presiding over a hearing, watching a witness testify and judging whether they're credible, and taking personal responsibility for a sentence, are a different kind of work entirely, one that still happens only with a person physically on the bench.

Why can't AI eventually just take over deciding cases?
