A landscape architect moves between a screen full of planting plans and a muddy job site, where a tree meant to go in one spot on the drawing has to be shifted because of a rock no one mapped.
What parts of landscape design does AI already produce?
Planting plans, renderings that show a client what a finished park will look like, and the written reports that go with a permit application are already strong work for generative AI. Why does someone still need to be on site once the plan is drawn?
A drawing can't feel the soil, and a planting plan gets adjusted in real time once trees are actually being placed and a hidden obstacle shows up. Watching how people actually use a finished park, then feeding that back into the next design, is also something no rendering tool does on its own.
How should a landscape architect prepare for AI-drafted plans?
Spend less time producing renderings by hand and more time on site walk-throughs and client conversations about how a space will really be used. A landscape architecture degree still matters, but field judgment about soil, drainage and plant health is what a design tool cannot substitute for.
