Lawyer: what AI changes and what stays

Becoming a lawyer in the U.S. means a bachelor's degree in almost any subject, three years of law school, and passing a state bar exam before you can sign a filing or argue in court. AI drafts and researches close to a first-year associate's level, but it can't sit the bar, so it can't sign anything.

Which parts of legal work does AI do now?

Drafting memos, first-pass research and contract review are already close to associate quality, and firms are folding that into daily workflow fast. Courtroom advocacy stays with a licensed lawyer because rules against unauthorized practice of law reserve arguing a case and signing court filings for someone who's passed the bar — but that rule protects the courtroom function, not the number of junior associates a firm decides to hire each year.

What can't AI do in a courtroom or negotiation?

Cross-examining a witness in real time, sitting across a table to actually close a settlement, and talking a client through a decision that could end a company or a marriage are things that need a person in the room reading tone and reacting to it.
