Many gyms already let members sign up and ask basic questions through an app, so leading people in person is what's left.

Signing up for membership, booking a class, and getting an answer to a basic question about hours or pricing already happen through an app or a kiosk, without a member ever needing to talk to a person. That has already thinned out the pure front-desk side of this job at a lot of facilities.
What still needs a person leading in person?
Reading a group's energy during a class and adjusting on the spot, walking the floor to catch damaged equipment before someone gets hurt, and settling a locker or space dispute between members all need a physical presence and real-time judgment an app can't provide. Someone has to actually be there.
What helps someone stay valuable in this kind of job?
Since headcount is thin, getting certified in whatever hands-on skill a facility actually needs, leading a specific class format or safety and rescue training, makes a person harder to replace than someone who only checks people in. That in-person leadership is now most of the job.
