That's a real shift in planning, but someone still has to open up the machine and physically fix whatever is actually wrong.
Why does this role stay secure as long as it does?
As long as repairs are done by hand, a crew of mechanics needs someone directing which job comes first when everything feels urgent, and that leadership role doesn't disappear on its own. The job only meaningfully shrinks once robots can perform the actual repairs, which hasn't arrived yet for most physical equipment.
What should a maintenance manager build skill in now?
Getting comfortable reading a predictive-maintenance dashboard and turning it into an actual repair schedule is a real, current skill worth building, on top of the hands-on diagnostic experience the job has always required. Staying good at the harder part, calming an angry customer and explaining a repair honestly, still matters as much as the wrench work.
