Federal forecasters go through a formal process before any job cut, while broadcast and private meteorologists can be let go at will.
What should someone studying meteorology focus on now?
Get fluent at reading where AI and traditional models disagree and building the judgment to make a call anyway, since that disagreement is exactly where a human forecaster still earns their place. Practice communicating urgency clearly to emergency officials and the public under real time pressure — a skill a forecasting model was never built to have.
