An NDT inspector's day involves climbing into tight or high spaces to place a probe against a weld, handling a radioactive source safely on site, and sometimes telling a client their part failed when they were hoping to hear it passed. AI already reads the resulting scans faster and more consistently than a person alone.
What part of weld inspection does AI already handle?
Software already reads X-ray film and ultrasonic scan data, flagging likely flaws in a weld faster and more consistently than a person studying the same image. That's the part done at a desk; someone still has to climb up, place the probe against the actual weld, and get a clean scan in the first place.
Why does someone still have to physically place the probe?
Reaching a weld inside a cramped pipe or high up on a structure to get a usable scan is physical work no robot does routinely yet, and handling a radioactive source safely on site carries a legal responsibility that stays with a trained person. Calling a real defect when a client wants a pass is also a judgment a machine reading a screen doesn't carry the weight of.
What should someone in this field build skill in now?
Since AI already speeds up reading the scan itself, the harder-to-replace skill is getting a clean, usable scan from an awkward angle in the first place, and holding your judgment on a defect under pressure from a client. Training that crosses into aviation maintenance inspection work broadens where that skill applies.
