A petroleum engineer's job is splitting in two: the modeling and planning side is becoming mostly a matter of directing software, while the part that still requires someone in coveralls at the wellsite — watching a drill in real time — is not going anywhere soon.
Which parts of this job move to AI first?
Reservoir simulation, well planning and choosing drilling parameters are number-heavy work that AI already does well, and large operators are already using it to need fewer engineers per project. What stays with people is standing on location during drilling: reading how the rock and equipment behave in real time and adjusting the plan when something the simulation didn't predict happens.
Why doesn't a license hold engineer headcount steady?
Professional engineering licenses, the kind that make an outside signature legally required, mostly don't apply here: a company's own in-house engineers fall under an exemption that lets them work without one. With no license rule fixing how many engineers a company must employ, hiring simply tracks oil prices — companies add engineers when prices are high and cut them when a downturn hits, license or no license.
What should someone entering this field focus on?
A degree in petroleum engineering is the direct route, though geology and earth-science training covers some of the same reservoir knowledge and can lead here too. Since the desk work of running simulations is what AI absorbs first, time spent on an actual rig — supervising drilling, not just modeling it on a screen — is what keeps a young engineer relevant as firms need fewer people at a desk.
