Radiologist: what AI changes and what stays

Reading a scan for the first pass is closer to being replaced by software than almost any other doctor's task. What keeps radiologists in the loop is that no health authority has approved a tool to read a routine scan without a doctor's sign-off, and insurers barely pay for the tools that already exist.

Why is this job first in line for AI to take over?

Interpreting an image is the most software-like part of practicing medicine, and tools that flag likely findings on a scan are already fairly capable. Large hospital-owned imaging groups are expected to move first once a health authority clears a tool to read routine, low-risk scans without a doctor checking every one, since they run the volume where the savings add up.

What still needs a radiologist's judgment?

Around a thousand AI tools already have approval as an assistant that flags things for a doctor to review, but none has approval yet to read a scan entirely on its own, and insurers still pay little for using these tools. A radiologist is also who performs needle biopsies and other procedures guided by imaging, and who a treating doctor calls to talk through a genuinely confusing case.
