A rideshare driver's day is picking up passengers and following turn-by-turn directions from an app, work a self-driving car can already do in a growing number of cities. Waymo already runs paid, driverless rides in several metro areas.
Where is human driving already being replaced outright?
In the metro areas where a self-driving service already operates, a rider can now book a paid trip with no human driver at all, through the same apps drivers use to find work. Uber and Lyft are folding those driverless cars directly into their own platforms, and new driver sign-ups in those specific cities are already being slowed down as a result.
Why hasn't this disappeared everywhere at once?
Driverless service is still limited to the specific cities where a company has built out mapping, permits, and a fleet, so a driver in a metro area without that coverage keeps working as before. There's also no medallion system or union contract protecting rideshare driving, which is unusual for a job this exposed — nothing structural is slowing the rollout down.
What should someone driving for a platform today think about?
Because this is one of the more exposed jobs on this site, with no licensing structure buying extra time, treating rideshare driving as a bridge rather than a career and building toward a licensed trade or a role that requires being physically present with cargo or passengers with special needs is worth doing sooner rather than later.
