What part of a school psychologist's job is AI already doing?
Scoring standardized tests and drafting the long written evaluation report that a student's individualized learning plan gets built on used to take a psychologist hours of paperwork per case. AI now drafts that report and scores those tests quickly, which is why a single psychologist can realistically be assigned to more schools than before without the workload becoming impossible.
Why can't a school just use AI to run the evaluation?
Federal special-education law requires the evaluation itself to be run by a credentialed examiner, on a legal timeline, before a student can be placed in special-education services — a report a program generates on its own doesn't satisfy that. Sitting with a student to observe how they actually work through a problem, and talking with a worried parent about what the results mean, also aren't things a report can do.
What should someone entering this field prepare for?
A graduate program in school psychology or a related clinical-psychology track is still the entry point, and there's already a real shortage of credentialed people in this job, so demand for the role itself isn't disappearing. Getting fast and fluent with the AI drafting tools now in use frees up time for the assessment and family conversations that still need a person.
