An AI draft of a script reads fine on the page. What it still can't do is make a producer believe in the story enough to fund it, or make an audience cry — and that gap is where screenwriters still earn their pay.
What part of screenwriting does AI already touch?
Assistant-level work goes first: outlining minor scenes, generating filler dialogue, or producing a quick draft to react to. Studios use this to cut the number of paid assistants and to push down what they pay per episode, since a writer now edits a draft instead of starting from a blank page. The craft of building a character an audience actually cares about is judged as still largely a human skill.
Why do studios still need a person, not just a model?
Someone has to sit across from a producer and defend why a scene matters, then rewrite it on set when a director changes their mind mid-shoot — a live back-and-forth a model can't do. This is a judgment this site applies at a general level rather than one built from US industry data, since American film labor patterns differ from what it modeled directly.
How does a working or aspiring screenwriter adapt?
Learning to edit and punch up an AI-generated draft fast is becoming as valuable as writing from scratch, since that is increasingly the actual daily task. Building a portfolio around distinct voice and character work — the part machines struggle with — matters more than volume of pages written.
