Scrum Master: what AI changes and what stays

A scrum master's actual job is keeping a daily team meeting honest, catching a conflict between an engineer and product before it blows up, and shielding the team from too many mid-sprint requests. AI now writes the meeting notes, leaving people problems as most of what's left.

What part of this role has AI already taken over?

Summarizing a daily standup, writing a sprint report from the team's chat and tickets, and cleaning up a backlog are all things AI now does directly from the raw data, without someone typing it up by hand. That's already removed a lot of the paperwork side of running a team's process.

What does a person still have to do here?

Noticing that an engineer and a product manager are quietly frustrated with each other before it stalls the team, and pushing back when too many new requests land mid-sprint, both require reading a room, not a chat log. A short paid course from a private group certifies the title, but doesn't teach either skill.

What should someone in this role work on?

Since a private certificate doesn't require much and doesn't carry legal weight, pairing this role with a second skill, actual project management or hands-on engineering experience, makes someone harder to treat as a standalone hire. Practicing conflict mediation directly, rather than just running meetings, is the part that still needs a person.
