A large part of a security analyst's day used to be watching a stream of alerts and deciding which ones were worth chasing. AI already sorts and prioritizes most of that stream on its own, though attacks that are themselves AI-generated are creating new work at roughly the same time.
Why is this shrinking and growing at the same time?
Sorting through a flood of security alerts and flagging the ones that look real is already something AI does at a level YOU’RE NEXT rates as solid, which cuts the routine monitoring side of this job. At the same time, attacks that use AI themselves are getting more sophisticated, and YOU’RE NEXT expects those two forces to roughly offset each other until around 2030, when the routine-work cuts likely start to win out.
What still needs a human during a real breach?
Leading the actual response while a breach is happening, deciding what to shut down and in what order while real damage is accumulating, is a high-pressure judgment call that stays with a person. Persuading other teams to accept the friction of a new security requirement, and judging which of the alerts that make it past automated filtering are genuinely a threat, also stay human work.
What should someone in this field study now?
A cybersecurity degree remains a solid, direct path into this field, and that has not changed even as AI takes over more of the routine monitoring. Since AI-generated attacks are part of what is keeping this role in demand, understanding how those attacks actually work is worth as much attention as the defensive tools themselves.
