What's already moving to AI on the process side?
Yield analysis, the constant work of figuring out why a batch of chips came out worse than expected, and tuning a process recipe to fix it, increasingly run through AI models trained on huge amounts of fab data. What still needs a person is physically going into the fab to fix a tool, and making a real-time call under pressure about whether to stop a production lot.
Why is this one of the few roles where hiring isn't shrinking yet?
Chip demand is strong enough that fabs are still adding engineers even as software takes over more of the analysis work, since a 24-hour production floor needs bodies on hand for equipment failures no matter how good the yield models get. What keeps this job growing rather than shrinking, for now, is that physical, always-on side of the work.
What should someone entering this field prepare for?
Being ready for round-the-clock, high-pressure decision-making on the fab floor matters as much as technical depth, since that's the part of the job least likely to move to software soon. A background in materials science or physics gives the foundation, but real comfort working inside a cleanroom under time pressure is what the job actually asks for day to day.
