Standing watch through an actual storm, commanding a crew who are living together at sea for months, and making a real-time call on a tricky port approach or berthing maneuver all depend on judgment under pressure that a remote system doesn't yet carry the responsibility for. Someone still has to be the person the crew answers to when something goes wrong far from shore.
How should someone build a lasting career at sea?
Getting real experience actually commanding a crew and handling difficult ports and weather, not just running the technical systems, is what will keep an officer valuable as automation changes bridge staffing. Given the seafarer shortage, officers who can also help train and retain newer crew members make themselves harder for a carrier to do without.
