Textile Engineer: what AI changes and what stays

A textile engineer's lab work, testing which fiber blends might perform well and crunching process data, is now something software does quickly. What software still can't judge is how a finished fabric actually feels in the hand, which is why that judgment keeps a smaller team in the mill.

Which part of developing a new fabric moves to AI first?

Screening which fiber and chemical combinations might work, and combing through process data from a production run, are now largely handled by software that can test far more combinations than a person could by hand. That shrinks the design-side headcount first, while people are still needed once a fabric has to actually be made on the factory floor.

Why can't dyeing and weaving run without an engineer?

Judging a fabric's hand-feel and drape, how it moves and feels against skin, is not something a sensor reports well, so someone has to make that call before a batch ships. That same person is usually the one who adjusts the dye recipe or loom settings on the spot and works out a defect with the weaving crew face to face, which keeps teams small rather than empty.

Spend real time on the mill floor judging fabric by touch, not only reading a spec sheet, since that hands-on sense is what stays hardest to automate.
