Remote stock sensing and AI route planning let one person cover far more machines, so headcount shrinks, but hauling cases up stairs to restock stays human.

AI impact · ShrinkingVending Machine Operator: what AI changes and what stays
Remote sensors that report a machine's stock and AI route planning already let one person cover far more vending machines than before, which is why the headcount here shrinks even though nobody's replaced the physical job of carrying cases up a flight of stairs.
Which parts of this route job does AI already run?
Sensors inside a machine now report exactly what's low and where, and AI route-planning software works out the fastest order to visit every machine on a route — both jobs a person used to do by memory or a paper checklist. That's why one operator can now realistically cover a much bigger territory than before, without the job disappearing outright.
Why can't the restocking itself be automated away?
Someone still has to physically carry cases of drinks and snacks up stairs or through a back hallway to reach a machine, since most vending locations were never built with a delivery robot in mind. Clearing a jam, fixing a stuck coin mechanism or a card reader that's acting up on the spot also needs hands, not a remote alert, which is why a person still visits every machine in person.
How should a vending route operator prepare for a bigger route?
Since one person now covers more machines, getting fast and organized about which machines actually need a visit — using the stock alerts instead of guessing — is what makes a bigger route manageable instead of exhausting. It's also worth building basic repair skills for jams and coin or card mechanisms, since fixing something on the spot avoids a second trip to the same location.
