A youth worker's day is spent actually running the activity — leading a camp session, chaperoning an overnight trip, and slowly earning the trust of a teenager who's learned not to expect much from adults — none of it something you could do through a screen.
What parts of youth work are already shifting to AI?
Planning activity schedules, writing up grant applications and handling routine administrative paperwork are exactly the kind of structured writing tasks AI already handles reasonably well, and organizations are starting to lean on it there. None of that touches the actual time spent leading kids through an activity or responding to a safety situation on an outing, which is why front-line staffing hasn't followed the same path.
Why does earning a teenager's trust stay a human task?
A teenager who's wary of adults doesn't open up because a program is well organized — that trust gets built through repeated, in-person interaction with someone who shows up consistently. State rules that set a minimum ratio of staff to children for younger kids also put a floor under how few people a program can run with, at least for those age groups, which slows how far staffing can shrink.
How does someone get into youth work?
There's no specific license required; many people start as camp counselors or program assistants and build experience from there rather than needing a particular credential up front. Degrees in human services, family studies or recreation can help for supervisory roles, but the core skill worth building is simply showing up reliably and consistently for young people who are slow to trust adults.
