Audio production splits into studio work done entirely on a screen and live work done on-site at a venue or broadcast. AI tools are already handling routine mixing, mastering, and noise cleanup, while setting up a live mix, rigging equipment, and running sound during a broadcast still require someone physically there.
What part of audio production is AI already handling?
Cleaning up noise, balancing levels, and a first mastering pass are becoming tasks an AI tool can do well enough that a studio assistant is not needed to do them by hand anymore. That is the kind of entry-level task new graduates used to build experience on. Setting up microphones and running a mix live, in real time, during an actual event is a different task that a tool can't step in for.
Do all audio jobs shrink at the same time?
Broadcast engineering and record production shift earliest, since both involve a lot of screen-based signal processing. Studio mixing and mastering work follows close behind. Live event setup, rigging, and broadcast crew work hold on the longest of the group, because someone still has to physically place a microphone, run a cable, and adjust a mix in the room while a show is happening.
What should an audio-production student focus on?
Get hands-on experience running sound at an actual live event or broadcast, not just editing in a studio, since that in-person work lasts longest. Learn to use AI mixing and mastering tools as a fast first pass you then adjust by ear. Build real rigging and setup skills, since being able to physically wire and troubleshoot a venue is not something software can do.
