CDL programs teach backing a rig into a dock, coupling and uncoupling trailers, and following the hours-of-service rules that limit how long a driver can stay on the road. Software already plans routes, watches for drowsiness in the cab, and is starting to handle long stretches of highway on its own.

How is AI already changing a truck driver's job?

Long, repetitive hauls between distribution hubs, exactly the routes many new drivers use to build experience, are where self-driving systems are furthest along; driverless trucks already run some commercial routes between hubs in Texas, and no federal rule stops them. That pushes new drivers toward regional and last-mile work instead: backing into tight docks, coupling trailers by hand, and dealing directly with dispatchers, tasks a computer still cannot do. What should a CDL student do now?

Ask a training program how much of its road time still involves manual docking, coupling, and pre-trip inspection rather than open-highway miles, since those hands-on skills matter more as automated systems take over long routes. Building a clean safety record early and learning to read the newer in-cab monitoring software will help no matter which route type is hiring later.
