Comparative Literature: how AI affects graduate hiring

Comparative literature trains a reader to hold two languages and two literary traditions in mind at once, then explain what changes in translation. Editors and small presses used to hand a graduate a manuscript to translate from scratch; today they're just as likely to hand over a machine's raw pass and ask what it missed.

What part of literary translation work is changing first?

A first-draft translation, and even a fair amount of proofreading and line editing, are already something a program does at a usable level, so the freelance work new graduates relied on for early income is thinning out fastest.
