Class of 2030: the hiring decline may start before you graduate
Intraoral scanning and AI-driven automated prosthetic design are taking over the model making and design work once handled by new hires, and there is no licensing barrier. Much of the lab work already lost went to overseas labs and milling machines.

Major lifespan is the time left until AI is expected to start shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates. It doesn’t mean the major will disappear or that everyone will lose their job.

Dental Laboratory Technology: how AI affects graduate hiring

A dental lab technician builds crowns, bridges, and dentures from a dentist's scan or mold, working with wax, porcelain, or increasingly a digital design screen instead of a physical model. Scanning the mouth directly and AI-assisted design software are taking over exactly the modeling and design work new techs used to start on.

Why is this major's outlook already this weak?

Intraoral scanners now capture a patient's mouth digitally, and AI-driven design software can shape a crown or denture on screen faster than a new tech could build a physical model by hand, cutting into the entry-level work this career used to start with. Because there's no license standing in the way, and a lot of this work had already shifted overseas or to milling machines before AI arrived, YOU'RE NEXT expects that pullback to already be visible by around 2028.

How does this compare with dental assisting?

Dental assisting, working chairside with patients rather than in a lab building restorations, holds up considerably longer than dental lab technology does, since that job depends on hands-on patient contact rather than fabrication work software can increasingly replicate. The two careers, despite sharing the word 'dental,' face almost opposite pressure from AI.

What should a dental lab technology student do given this shift?

Since basic model-making and design are what's moving fastest to software, learning to run and troubleshoot the digital design and milling systems labs now use — rather than only traditional hand-building — is the most transferable skill going forward. Specializing in complex custom cases that still need a skilled hand, like difficult implant restorations, also offers more room than routine work.
