English Language & Literature: how AI affects graduate hiring

An English degree trains close reading, precise editing and argument-building, skills used across publishing, corporate writing and classrooms. Yet the daily tasks a new graduate is handed, like checking manuscripts and drafting short copy, are exactly where writing software now goes first.

What does an entry-level editing job actually involve?

Much of that work is proofreading manuscripts, formatting citations and drafting short marketing or web copy, checking rather than composing from scratch. Grammar and style-checking tools now catch most surface errors before a person opens the file, and drafting software turns out a rough blurb on request. What is left for a new hire is judging whether a piece is worth publishing and shaping its voice, not fixing commas.

Why can't schools just replace English teachers with software?

Teaching requires a license separate from the English degree itself, earned through a state exam and licensing process, and a classroom still needs a person managing a room of teenagers. That keeps the teaching path open far longer than editing or technical-writing work, which right now has no equivalent license standing in the way. Publishing and copywriting jobs are already tightening earlier than the classroom path.

How can an English major prepare for this shift?

Build a portfolio of edited or published work rather than relying on the degree alone; internships at a paper, press or content team are the usual way in. Because software now drafts routine copy, the more valuable skill is fixing, fact-checking and improving an AI draft, not writing one from nothing. Pairing the degree with a specific subject, or with the coursework a teaching license requires, gives graduates a second door.
